Navy Yard Broad Street Entrance
Begin your tour here, at the Broad Street entrance of the Navy Yard.
Did you know that Philadelphia was the birthplace of the U.S Navy? In 1776, the Continental Congress set up docks on Front St. to aid in naval defense, and from the 19th century to the 1990s ships were produced and repaired here, in the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard. At its peak, during World War II, more than 40,000 people were employed by the naval base. Today, it is a site of publicly funded infrastructure projects and hopefully a lovely bike adventure!
