The Woodmere Art Museum in Chestnut Hill is dedicated to the art of Philadelphia, and the great artists and who called Southeastern Pennsylvania home. Charles Knox Smith purchased the Woodmere estate in 1898, and opened it to the public in 1910 with the grand intention of showcasing his extensive collection of art in a natural setting that he hoped would give visitors a sensory experience that they would remember. The museum currently houses 6000 works of art in nine galleries, and also hosts many programs including lectures, panel discussions, gallery talks, tours, jazz and classical music series, films, and education outreach to Philadelphia schools.
